How to see updates partially approved ?
Marco 7/11/2007 5:34:01 AM
Hi everyone.

One functionality I really like in WSUS 3 is the ability to create groups of
groups.
I created a group of PC where I want first to test the updates so I approve
the Update only for the “Test Group”, and then if everything goes fine, I
want to Approve the Update for an other group where I have all my other PC.
But so far I didn’t discover, how to easily find an update which was
approved for one group, but not for an other, unless I write down on a
post-it the I applied that Update for that group, and to remember to apply it
later for the rest of the PCs.
Is there a way to see all the updates which have been approved for some
groups, but not all groups ?

Thanks for your help.

Marco.

Yes, right click on the Updates node and select "New Update View". From the
dialog box select the option "Updates are approved for a specific group".
Click on the group hyperlink in the bottom frame, and select your test
group(s).

This will give you a list of all of the updates you have approved for your
test group. To then approve them for your production groups, select the
desired update(s), right click, select Approve, and set the approval(s) for
the additional target groups.

Excellent, thank you so much.

One more question please.
I would like then to Approve automaticaly All Critical Updates to all the
groupes, but the security updates, I would like to approve them automaticaly
only to the Test Group.
Is it possible to define it that way ? For some category of updates, it's
automaticaly approved to Group1 and Group2, and for an other category of
updates, it's automaticaly approved only for Group1 ?

Regards

Marco

An interesting philosphy, but fairly easy to set up.

[1] To configure auto-approval for ALL Critical Updates for ALL groups:
[a] Select Options | Automatic Approvals
[b] Click on "New Rule"
[c] [Step 1] Select "When an update is in a specific classification"
[d] [Step 2] Click on the "any classification" hyperlink.
[e] Unselect "All Classifications"; select "Critical Updates"; click on
OK
[f] [Step 3] Assign a name to the update; click on OK.

[2] To configure auto-approval for ALL Security Updates for only the Test
Group:
[a] Click on "New Rule"
[b] [Step 1] Select "When an update is in a specific classification"
[c] [Step 2] Click on the "any classification" hyperlink.
[d] Unselect "All Classifications"; select "Security Updates"; click on
OK
[e] Click on the "all computers" hyperlink.
[f] Unselect "All Computers"; select <<Test Group>>; click on OK
[g] [Step 3] Assign a name to the update; click on OK

This suggests that you have misunderstood the relationship between "critical"
and "security" updates; security updates are *more* important than critical
updates, not less important.

Harry.

Hi Harry,

You're probably right. Where can I find a description of what the different
category of updates stand for ?
I find that there is not so much information about the updates, especially
the security ones, probably for security reasons I guess.

Cheers

Thanks so much Lawrence. So easy and I missed it, shame on me.
What would be your recommendation about the philosophie to apply for the
automatic approbation between what's very important and has to be applied as
fast as possible, and what should be tested first before general approbation ?

Regards
