Best High Level Architecture
DT 5/18/2007 9:04:00 PM
I will be architecting the new implementation of WSUS for a large company. I
have a couple of questions.

What is the best direction for the High Level Architecture for WSUS v3.0?

Are there any sources I can view examples or other business' high level
archtiectures?

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The first question is: Why WSUS 3.0 and not System Center SCM (System
Configuration Manager)? (the former SMS product).

The second "question" is: It depends on your organization (number of
systems, number of sites, available bandwidth), and your organization's
business needs in terms of update approval and deployment.

I'd point you in the direction of MVP Jeff Centimano (who's probably reading
this message right now) to get perspectives on deploying WSUS in an
=enterprise= organization, as he's got a significant amount of real-world
experience. (Though, I'm not without my own academic theories, as well. <g>)

Everything you need for WSUS is at

And, almost everything else is at

Funny, Lawrence... are you trying to freak me out.

DT -- Actually I'm finishing up a whitepaper on this topic right now. Being
a whitepaper it is level 200 - so it might not answer all your questions.
However, it will cover the branch office/enterprise options in enough detail
that you can pick and choose what makes sense. Stay tuned to the main WSUS
site for the whitepaper (and check out the UI-focused one that is already
live).
