Wuaueng Database recovery/restore (Event ID 454)
jwgoerlich[ at ]gmail.com 5/18/2007 3:07:03 PM
Periodically, my Windows 2000 Servers get ESENT Event ID 454:
wuaueng.dll (1696) Database recovery/restore failed with unexpected
error -1011. Once this occurs, additional errors are logged about
every 5 minutes until the Automatic Updates service is restarted.

I repaired DataStore.edb. I have cleared the SoftwareDistribution
folder altogether and repopulated. I have reinstalled Wsus 2. Lately,
I upgraded to the Wsus 3.0 client. Any of these steps cleared it for a
period of time, sometimes days or weeks. Then the symptom reoccurs and
the event log fills back up.

Can someone suggest a good permanent solution?

J Wolfgang Goerlich

Yeah.... but the fact that you still have Windows 2000 Servers means you
won't like my suggestion.

But in the meantime, I'd take a look at the actual *procedures* being used
to detect/download/install these machines.

Corruption of the datastore.edb is a *rare* occurrence, in reality. If
you're having regular problems, then you've likely got something going on
way beyond the scope of WSUS.

Could you break this out a bit, please? Do you mean detect/download/
install updates rather than machines?

I agree that the earlier I roll everything to Windows 2003, the
better.

Thanks,

I used the word "machines" because I'm assuming you have this issue on more
than one system.

Yes, to 'detect/download/install' update on these several machines.

My basic point was that *something* is causing the corrpution of your
datastore.edb (assuming that is, in fact, the actual issue), and the
corruption of that file is a highly unusual event. This suggests that
*something* is doing something it shouldn't be doing.
