WUSU 3 and Super eded Status
DaveMills <DaveMills[ at ]newsgroup.nospam> 5/22/2007 6:17:59 AM
Am I missing something. The only view that shows the superceded status that I
can find is in the Updates view. There is an icon in the top half and the detail
in the lower half. If I search for an update or follow the link in the Computer
view of needed updates I cannot see any info about superceded.

This makes is very difficult to look at needed updates and only approve the ones
that are not superceded. I have only recently installed WSUS 3 and so there are
a lot of updates showing as needed. I have also just installed W2003 x64 and
again there are lots of updates and it is hard to not approve the superceded
ones.

Is there a way of seeing this info from the Needed view.

You're right that the only place the supersedence info shows is in the lists
and the preview pane. Would it work for you to filter the lists to just show
the needed updates, sort by supersedence, and decline (after evaluation) the
superseded ones?

Thanks
Kris

Dave, Do you have the Supersedence column heading enabled in the
Updates view? Right click on any column heading and add it. You can
then sort on that column like we did in the 2.0 interface.

Yes but in that view I cannon easily see what is needed by a group of PCs

First: I wonder where the "c" went in my subject - odd typo :-)

With WSUS 2 I could follow the link to see what updates were actually needed by
a PC then before approving I could see if an update was superceded and only
approve the latest one. For example the most common superceded updates are
definition updates. If I have been away on leave when I return there may be 2
definition updates available and both are flagged as "needed". I cannot see in
the Needed view which to approve (sometime the date in the title gives this away
and sometimes is does not). If I approve both then the client will sort out
which it needs to install but by approving the superceded one it will get
downloaded. Later I will decline it. I would like to be able to see the
superceded status in the Needed view so I can approve only the superceding
update. The superceded update will then stop being needed. I feel safer
declining an update if it is superceded AND nothing is reporting it as needed. I
cannot do that in WSUS 3 without first approving the update.

So to answer your question I would like to have the superceded details in the
view I get when I follow a hyperlink to the updates details. I would also like
the release date in that view too. I assume that this view is the same if I
follow the link from Updates, Search, Computer/needed view, it looks the same.
Having it as a column header in the computer view would be a bonus.

Or course the problem is much worse for a new installation of WSUS then for a
mature WSUS where only the current months updates have to be considered.
