Cannot see Server in list of Computers
Steve 5/30/2007 4:13:02 PM
Hello

I have installed WSUS 3 on a new server. It sees all the client PC's ok but
wont show the server itself. The summary page looks and shows the server but
in the list of computers I only see the clients. The server is obviously
setup in SBS 2003 and in the domain but whatever I do I cannot get it to
appear in the list

The SBS2003 server is contained in the OU "Domain Controllers" and is the
only system in that OU (unless you have a second DC deployed).

Most common issue in SBS environments with this symptom is failing to link
the GPO to the "Domain Controllers" OU.

How did you get the GPOs linked to the OUs in the SBSComputers container?

This is what I have under Active Directory C=Users and Computers Management:

MyDomain.local
Builtin
Computers (empty)
Domain Controllers (empty)
ForeignSecurityPrincipals
MyBusiness
Computers
SBSComputer (contains all my client PC's)
SBSServers (contains my server)

Re: Cannot see Server in list of Computers
Steve 6/1/2007 4:25:02 PM

Having read further and tried to learn a bit more about this, I realised the
server should be in the Domain Controllers list so I moved it there. I then
created a new group policy calllled WSUS and set the settings for the
automatic updates. I then linked this to Domain Controllers and rebooted the
server.

Still I only see my client PC's on the WSUS window. If I do a search, the
list shows all my clients but not my server so I cannot get updates applied
to the server as a result.

Either what I tried above is not what you meant (quite possible as I'm not
sure what I'm doing) or its not the answer.

Are there any other ideas as to why WSUS wont list one PC on the network
which happens to be the server.

Thanks

So... who reorganized your Active Directory memberships from the default
installation?

The SBS2003 server *must* be in the "Domain Controllers" OU. There's a bunch
of DC-specific GPOs linked to that OU, that are *not* being applied to your
server if it's in the SBSServers OU. Put it back in "Domain Controllers"!

The SBSServers OU is for *additional* servers, that are not domain
controllers.

Good. (I should have read your subsequent post before firing off my last

Okay.. but now we know where to start diagnostics!

Run the Client Diagnostic Tool on the SBS2003 server, and post the results.

Dozens... but the odds are good that the CDT will tell us exactly why.

Re: Cannot see Server in list of Computers
Steve 6/4/2007 10:14:02 AM
I found some posts about this error which suggested the server name should be
http://server not just server. I changed this and here is the output now.
However I still dont see the server.

Re: Cannot see Server in list of Computers
Steve 6/4/2007 10:56:00 AM
After further reading of help files I managed to find about configuring GPO's
for WSUS I managed to get the server to report. I'm not 100% sure what I
changed that allowed this but its there now.

Thanks for all your time.

This is not the CLIENT Diagnostic Tool.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/7/6/976d1084-d2fd-45a1-8c27-a467c768d8ef/WSUS%20Client%20Diagnostic%20Tool.EXE

It's the configuration of the =WSUS Server=, which doesn't really do us much
good in this diagnostic effort.

But..it did give us one useful piece of information... you originally
posted:

But the server has not been configured to use client-side targeting. It's
still configured at the (default) server-side targeting.

Ahh.. ye olde '2ee6' error...

0x80072ee6 - ERROR INTERNET UNRECOGNIZED SCHEME

The URL needs to be formatted as a *URL*! http://SERVER will fix this
problem,
along with changing the configuration in the server to use client-side
targeting.

That would be, because, on an SBS Server, WSUS is *always* installed on the
alternate virtual server.

The URL should be http://server:8530

Also, you'll still need to change the server configuration from 'server-side
targeting' to 'client-side targeting'.

Well.. you would have either:
[a] added the port number to the URL, or
[b] changed the computer options setting on the WSUS Server.

But, both need to be done.
