Hi guys,
I deleted a computer from the WSUS server cause I was planning to reformat the computer and wanted it to get the updates again. I then solved the problem the machine was having and didn't need to reformat. The computer added itself again to WSUS, but has now downloaded updates it has already installed, and keeps trying to reinstall them and failing. How do I tell the WSUS server that this specific computer has already had these updates installed?
Cheers for any assistance, Anthony

You don't need to. You need to find out why the computer (not the WSUS server; the decisions are all made locally) thinks it needs those updates.
Firstly, are you *absolutely sure* that those updates really are installed? What happens if you download the update in question from the Microsoft Download Center and try installing it manually?

Hi,
I will investigate the local machine. There are actually about 50+ updates that are trying to reinstall. I am pretty sure they had already been installed, but I will triple check.
I remember that I also did a Repair Windows from the WinXP SP2 installation disk. I may have to uninstall the windows updates and let them install again
I will get the error messages from the windowsupdate log file and post them here too.

Sounds reasonable.
QFECHECK from the download center may be able to help you here; it lists the installed patches and verifies that they are really installed.

Hi again,
I did download one of the updates from the download centre as a test, and when I tried that one, it installed fine.
There is actually 81 updates it is trying to install through automatic updates, so if there is another solution besides downloading all hotfixes manually, it would be good. I ran the QFECHECK command and it only showed:
Report Date: 7/11/2007 1:39pm Current Service Pack Level: Service Pack 2
Hotfixes Identified: Q282784: Current on system. KB885884: Current on system. KB893803v2: Current on system. KB898461: Current on system.
So, the updates do not have appeared to have installed.
Here is the relevant section out of the windowsupdate log file. (Hopefully it is not too big)

This is about XP repair installation and WSUS problems. It might help you since it helped one of the techs here.

OK, sorry for late reply. Have not been able to get onto the computer again, as it is being used. Because I did the repair of Windows XP, all the updates would have been removed. (Thanks to Lawrence Garvin for this info) The problem is that the computer is not installing the updates it downloads from the Windows update server. There are about 77 updates that the yellow shield keeps saying it needs to install. I go to install them, and they fail to install. As per previous post (windows update log file), they are being skipped for some reason. (* WARNING: Exit code = 0x80004002) If I download them from the windowsupdate website, they still do not install. If I download them from the Download Centre they do install.
I can do them manually, but would prefer not to download 70+ downloads individually.
As for JEP0401's suggestion, I read the article, and it is not quite the same issue, as my computer know it needs the updates, but when it downloads them they do not install. I did try to download one manually and it did install, but that didn't solve the problem. Thanks for the effort! ;)
The latest Update client is installed already, but I will try those MBSA files to check the update status and get back to you.
If there are any other ideas let me know. I will try to force my way back into that machine tomorrow some time.
Thanks, Anthony
