How to import updates from WSUS 2.0 to WSUS 3.0 on a new server
Eric Sauve 6/19/2007 8:16:04 PM
This has probably been asked "ad nauseam" but I can't seem to find a simple
answer to this question. I intend to install WSUS 3.0 on a new server and
would much prefer to use the updates located on my exsisting WSUS 2.0
installation. Once the updates will be migrated to WSUS 3.0, I will
decommision the old WSUS 2.0 server. TIA

Are you wanting to just move the WSUS content (downloaded files) or also
move the approvals?

To reuse the content, just copy contents of the WSUS\WSUSContent from
your old 2.0 server to the new 3.0 server after the install. The content
remains the same for either version. When your new 3.0 server does a
synchronization, it will find the content already downloaded and will
not try and download again from MS.

If you want to move the approvals, it's a little trickier. From previous
postings I've seen on doing that, it would seem easiest to do an
in-place upgrade on the 2.0 server and then move that installation to
the new server. I can't give you the exact steps on accomplishing that,
but I know it's been posted a few times in the forum already.

Yeah. Wade is right. Have done this way. backuped the wsuscontent folder.
reinstall WSUS and then move the backuped wsuscontent folder to the current
wsuscontent folder. After synhcronizing, old updates didn' get downloaded.
Never tried for the approval though.

Wade, have you experience what to do if your drive where wsus content sits
runs out of space? Many thanks.

Not since the SUS 1.0 days. We got a new dedicated WSUS server with tons
of HD space when 2.0 came out. I've seen some posts about moving the
content, but I can't give you the solution off the top of my head.
