Can I use .net framework 3.0 instead of 2.0 when installing WSUS 3
Frank 5/17/2007 3:35:27 PM
I would like to build up a new WSUS 3.0 server. I was wondering if I could
install .net framework 3.0 instead of .net framework 2.0 and still have a
fully functional WSUS 3.0 server environment? Has this been tested?

You can have both on the same machine - we've tested that. I don't believe
that we've specifically tested 3.0 and not 2.0.
According to http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms687300.aspx, .Net
3.0 includes 2.0 - so I suspect it'll work fine.
Give it a try, and let us know.

Matthew,

Thanks for the reply. I will be testing this configuration on Monday and
will report back my findings.

Not "instead of" because .NET framework 3.0 itself requires .NET framework 2.0.
(The 3.0 installer will install 2.0 if it isn't already present.)

Harry.

Harry,

As you stated the 3.0 installer will install 2.0. I installed 3.0 and
looked in add/remove programs and noticed that both 3.0 and 2.0 were listed.
I tried uninstalling 2.0 and was greeted with a message stating that I
couldn't uninstall 2.0.

If I uninstall 3.0. it leaves 2.0 on the system (weird but okay). After
3.0 is uninstalled, I can now successfully remove .NET 2.0.

I don't pretend to be a developer or even understand the .NET Framework, but
my questions are:

What is the point of having 3.0 also install 2.0?

Is this the new way of doing things at Microsoft, to have the last two
versions available?

..NET 3.0 is a marketing name, it isn't a completely new
framework. It just adds some technologies (WPF and Workflow
stuff) to .NET 2.0.

The reason being that .NET 3.0 isn't actually a full version like .NET
2.0 was. .NET 3.0 is the managed code APIs that appeared with Vista and
Server 2008, formerly called WinFX. For some reason they decided that
blurring what the .NET framework was by calling that 3.0 was a good idea.

I wasn't aware that 3.0 could exist without the presence of 2.0? :-)

Ahh.. so apparently my assumption was correct. :-)

And.. I believe.... eventually.... this "marketing decision" *will* prove to
be problematic. (Not that it isn't already, given the current discussion
thread. <g>)
