Unable to backup WSUS 3.0 Database due to extra backslash characte
Claus H. 6/6/2007 1:21:00 PM
After installing WSUS 3.0 on a new Win2003R2 server I am unable to backup the
MICROSOFT##SSEE\SUSDB database.
Backup Exec 11d tells me that the reason is that it contains extra backslash
characters.
I have tried to detach the database using the sql admin tool, but are not
able to connect to the database, I think it is locked by design.

Has anyone experienced this problem and have a solution on how to detach the
database so I can change the double backslash problem ?

First, I would confirm with Symantec that BackupExec 11d supports the
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Embedded Edition database server.

Why would you do that?

Actually, it only operates on Named Pipes =and= the SSMS tool must be
installed on the WSUS server.

Why would you want to detach the databse, and change an alleged double
backslash problem, when you don't even have documentation on the database,
and have no knowledge of whether what you're doing will break your WSUS
server or not?

HINT: Use NTBACKUP as documented in the WSUS 3 Deployment Guide!

I have the same problem. I have Symantec Backup Exec on that machine
locally, I don't want to use NTBackup.

It's saying there are consecutive backslashes in the database path.
Is there any way to change that and have WSUS still work?

What I'm doing so far is running a scheduled task that uses NTBackup
to back it up to a backup file and then I back that file up... but I'd
rather not have to do that.

Any ideas anyone? Thank you.

Chris

I have the same issue. I had this issue with another vendors database
and was able to edit a table in the master database and remove the
extra backslash. Does anyone know how to access the WSUS 3.0 database
to edit it?

The same way you would access any other database. Install the client tools,
register the server, and voila.

The only complication is that using the Windows Internal Database, you must
install the SQL Client Tools on the WSUS server, and use Named Pipes for the
connetion.
