Move WSUS 3.0 installation to new server
Steve-UK 5/16/2007 3:54:02 PM
Our WSUS server is due for replacement soon, so I'll need to move the WSUS 3
installation to the new one.

Is there some documentation on how to do this, because I can't seem to find
any?

Also, I've got a couple of other questions:

Can you admin the database using SQL 2005 Management Studio on the local
server, I've set it to look for the embedded database but it can't seem to
connect? Does it have some special name?

Also I'm having a problem that is entirely random, occasionally when I open
reports the whole admin tool just shuts down. On the second attempt it
works. Not every time I open a report, just once in awhile. Tried the admin
tool on three different machines and it happens on all three, XP, Vista and
2003.

Steve, if your intent is to migrate a WSUS 2.0 server to WSUS 3.0 on a new
system, my best suggestion would be to:
[a] Migrate WSUS 2.0 to WSUS 2.0 on a new server.
[b] Upgrade in-place from WSUS 2.0 to WSUS 3.0 on the new server.

Yes, provided you've enabled SSMS to use Named Pipes to find the local
installation.

> Does it have some special name?

Yes. MICROSOFT##SSEE.

I'll defer on this issue to the WSUS dev people that are monitoring.
