WSUS 2.0 SP1
Maestro1 6/18/2007 10:25:00 PM
We are using WSUS 2.0 SP1 and I have configured our servers to automatically
install updates every morning at 3:00. I approve them around 9:00 AM the
morning prior. There are a number of processes such as backups and batch
jobs that run on either side of this time period so I would like to minimize
the update period. My question is: When is the update copied to the client?
Does it start (using BITS) when the update is approved for install or does it
wait until the scheduled install time? Inquiring minds want to know. :O)

Whenever the server executes it's scheduled detection event, which occurs
every 22 hours (by default). The download follows the detection event.

Neither. It starts using BITS once the request to download the update
package is queued. Which occurs immediately as a result of a successful
detection.

Put in practical terms, if you approve updates at 9am the morning before,
the detection will occur sometime during the next 22 hours. Notably, it
might not even occur until after the next scheduled installation time (3am,
which is only 18 hours later) -- although the odds are about 90% that it
will occur before 3am.

Thank you. I had been bouncing around the Internet looking for this.
