I am looking to figure out how to disable this prompt for my servers after having installed patches. My servers are in a seperate OU with different wsus policies. I have the policies set to automatically download but manually install. I want to prevent the icon in the system tray from constantly stating the machine needs to be restarted for patch updates to complete.
Thanks

Until the computer is restarted, the patch process is not complete!!
Best case scenario, the entire update is staged and will wait for the reboot to fully install ---> you are not patched.
Worst case scenario, the update process replaced all the modules it could get a lock on and is waiting on the reboot to replace the rest ---> you have an unstable system.
Servers should only be updated when you have the time to restart them.

At that point, the updates *have* been installed, but need a reboot. I don't believe there's a way to turn off the warning then.

... so reboot the machine!
Particularly in the case of servers, you should never install a patch without rebooting the machine immediately afterwards. (Unless the patch doesn't require a reboot, of course.)

There is an item in Group Policy relating to automatic restarts. Cannot remember the name right now, but is near the option to set where the WSUS server is...

The machines aren't safe to use if they have been patched and not rebooted. So, yes, you *do* need the warning, you're just choosing to ignore that need.
Why don't you postpone the shutdown of the machines for an hour or so and schedule the install for that period? Or if the machines are manually shut down, don't schedule the install at all, just use the "Install and Shutdown" option.

True statement. Without rebooting, there's no point in performing the installation.

Then, here's two options to consider:
[a] Install AT shutdown.
[b] Schedule the installation overnight, knowing that the machines will be powered off (or, radical though it may sound, you *could* leave them powered on for one night a month to faciliate updating). Ensure the option to install updates at powerON is enabled (it's a default option) if a scheduled installation is missed, and let the updates install in the morning when the machines are powered on.
Shucks, you could even come into work a half hour early and turn the machines on yourself so that they'll all be updated before the students need to use them. ;-)

Those two options should work indeed thanks, but I cant seem to find
the option to force the Install Updates at Shutdown in the Policy. I
can only find settings where you can have a warning to choose wether or
not to install during shutdown. So during useage you still get warning
to reboot. So basicly im looking for a option to Download Updates Autmaticly (It
does that now) and Update them at shutdown. (Not to get the warning to
choose for that at shutdown, I need it forced.. Normally they just get
powered off with the on/off button and Windows shutdowns automaticly.)
Where should I look for this? Or aint this possible?
Thanks, -Bram

They're actually in the SYSTEM.ADM template of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, so if you're configuring policy from a Windows 2000 system you won't be able to see them initially. In fact, the feature isn't even available on Windows 2000 systems, so keep that in mind if your students' systems are still running Win2K.
When you open the policy edtor, they should be the first two listed: "Do not display 'Install Updates and Shut Down' option in Shut Down Windows dialog box"
and
"Do not adjust default option to 'Install Updates and Shut Down' in Shut Down Windows dialog box"
By default they're both "Not Configured", which is supposed to automatically enable the feature, but I've not seen this happen consistently. To be sure, set both policies to DISABLED. The first policy will ensure the option is in the list; the second policy ensure's that it is always displayed as the default shutdown option when there are updates to be installed.

I think you'll want to re-read the functionality. You're looking at the right thing. :-)

YIKES!!!! *BAD* *BAD* *BAD* thing to be teaching students to do!
Teach them to use the START menu, or Ctrl-Alt-Delete, and select SHUTDOWN from the menu!
Not all systems support safe Windows shutdown with the power button, and learning that bad habit could cost somebody their profile, if not their entire system if they pop the power off to a system that doesn't shutdown correctly.
