Problems after uninstall
Malay Thakershi 7/10/2007 10:58:00 PM
Hi everyone,

I had WSUS 2.0 on WIN 2K server for 2 months. Due to lack of proper planning
on my part, I had to uninstall it 2 days back. However, the uninstall created
more problems.

It said the uninstall finished with errors but didn't say what errors.
However, it removed its entry from 'Add/Remove Programs'. So I thought I will
be able to manually delete the files and folders it has created and free up
the space (a lot of space). But now when I try to delete those folders (with
random names), it says 'access is denied'. Just to make sure no client
computers are still using these files, I removed the group policy from the
server and restarted everything. Earlier the 'inetinfo.exe' was taking up CPU
and memory like crazy but now it is under control. When I try to see
permissions on those folders, it says I don't have rights to see permissions
even though I am logged in as an "administrator". So now there are about 1000
folders of random names and huge size sitting on my two secondary drives.
Most of these folders have sub-folders starting with 'SP', a sub-folder
called 'updated', 'spuninst.exe' and 'spmsg.dll'.

Please help me find out what these folders are and how they can be removed.

Thank you so much.

This may not be a good idea, particularly if you're considering reinstalling
WSUS in the future. However ...

Most likely this is related to file permissions. You need to claim ownership of
the folder and contents (open the properties of the folder, go to Security,
click Advanced, go to Owner) and then change the permissions ("Replace
permission entries..." on the Permissions tab).

If this doesn't work, try stopping the IIS service.

Harry.

Thanks. I took the ownership and changed the permissions. I was able to
delete the files and free up a lot of space. I understand this is not the
best way to fix the problem but I do not intend to use WSUS in future at
least on this server.

Thank you again.
