WSUS 3 client with WSUS server 2.0 SP1
"Franz Leu" <franz.spam-removal.leu[ at ]norfolk.spam-removal.ch> 5/23/2007 8:49:02 AM
Hi

KB932494 says:
The WSUS version 3.0 client program has been made available to the WSUS 2.0
SP1 server infrastructure so that clients can "SelfUpdate" to the newer WSUS
3.0 version. This update to the SelfUpdate tree is located in the Critical
Updates classification and is identified as KB936301.

Of course I want to have this on all clients to end the svchost CPU issue.
For the moment I want to keep my WSUS server on V2.0 SP1. The update came
down this morning as 'Clientupdate für Windows Server Update Services 2.0
SP1 (KB936301)'. And here's the issue:

- It shows as not needed by all of the clients ?!?

How can I have this installed by WSUS without going to all the clients?
What is wrong?

Thanks, Franz

Hi Franz,

this Update is for the WSUS Server Itself.
So you will see "needed" for the WSUS Server if the Server is client of
itself.

You will not see any entry for the clients than.

Malte

You have to install the patch directly on the WSUS server. It will upgrade
the local SelfUpdate tree and all connecting clients will receive the
WUA3.0 update automatically (via selfupdate).

Just to make it clear KB936301 applies only to Windows 2003 servers and
not to WindowsXP!!

The WSUS Server says it's not needed ?!?
WSUS is on a SBS2003 R2.
Any ideas?

This is an update for the WSUS server. You need to approve this update to a
target group that contains the machine where WSUS is installed.Once the WSUS
server gets patched with this update, the clients that talk to the WSUS
server will automatically get self updated.

Some updates (I don't know if this is one of them) report as not needed once
they have been installed. Is there any chance the update was already installed?

Harry.

Can you please check to see if the AU client on the machine where WSUS is
installed is pointing to the WSUS server that has this update. Also make
sure the AU client has membership to the target group for which the update
is approved for install.

Send me the WindowsUpdate.log if you still have the issue.

Yes, it is pointing to the correct WSUS server and yes, the target group is
correct. For all other updates it works perfect.
I triggered a manual update and copied all the events from the log
(attached).
