WSUS Listing of Missing Computers
Johnson County Public Library, IT Staff 6/25/2007 5:49:00 PM
We use WSUS to push updates to both staff and public computers. I'd like to
know how or if there's a way to have computers listed in the "Review Missing
Computers" Category removed from that listing. I have several public pcs
that we need out of that listing. We do use a PC Sanitizer on Public PCs to
prevent unwanted downloads, so I'm wondering if that's causing them to be
listed there in the first place.

Can you define "public computers"? Technically, providing updates to
computers not licensed to the WSUS Server licensee is a violation of the
WSUS EULA.

This "Review Missing Computers" category sounds like a locally created
thing. There is no such entity in any WSUS server I've ever seen, WSUS v2 or
WSUS v3. (I'm looking at my WSUS v3 server right now.)

And, the only way there would be to get such a group populated, is by
manually assigning non-reporting computers to that group on a server
configured to use server-side targeting.

The way to remove computers from that group would be: Right Click on the
Computer and select Delete from the context menu.

Not likely.

I will definitely check into the licensing on this as you've said. I did
have one last question,
If I removed the non reporting computers from the listing, does that prevent
them from being recognized and receiving WSUS updates...again assuming that
the licensing is correct...?

Thank for your help Mr. Garvin,

Re: WSUS Listing of Missing Computers
Johnson County Public Library-Indiana 6/26/2007 6:57:01 PM
Hello Mr. Garvin,

Thank you for your assistance, I did have one last follow up for you on this
issue. If we manually remove the non-reporting computers that are causing
us the difficulty, then will the WSUS Server recognize them or find them
later on in order to send them updates? and..if it does find them, will it
recategorize them as non reporting?

The part that seems odd to me is that in the non reporting computers, it
shows that the computers are reporting in almost daily, so I'm unsure about
the accuracy of that grouping.

It's hard to tell though if it was manually grouped that way originally, if
this was done properly or correctly.

Thank you again for all your help.

It also just occurred to me that because you are a county public library,
that by "Public Computers", you may have meant "Computers that are available
for public use inside the library".

If that is the case, then there is *no* licensing issue here. The library
owns those computers.

If they're reporting daily, then the groupname is probably not an accurate
indicator of their status as "missing".

Maybe "missing" means something else<???>

It's hard to imagine somebody creating a target group called "Review Missing
Computers", and then assigning membership to that target group via Group
Policy, thus my *assumption* that the assignments were done manually, at the
server, as a response to them not reporting properly. Purely speculation on
my part, however.

You're the admin now. I'd say configure it whatever way works for *you*. :-)
