WSUS 3 download speeds
"Simon Gronow" <srg[ at ]babcom.net.au> 6/15/2007 7:31:11 AM
Hi

I have got 2 WSUS servers on the same ADSL link. 1 x WSUS ver 2 and 1 x WSUS
ver 3.

After approving updates it seems that the Ver 2 WSUS downloads quicker than
ver 3.

Is it me, the setup or WSUS?

Could be any one of a gazillion things. Unless the servers are configured
identically, such that they're configuring exactly the same metadata, it's
anybody's guess. If they're configured identically, were synchronizing and
downloading exactly the same content, it could still be the source server,
since WSUS 2 and WSUS 3 synchronize with different server farms at
microsoft.com. I'd say the most likely reason is [d] None of the above.

Consider that gazillions of users all over the world are downloading and
installing WSUS 3, and performing *initial* synchronizations against the
WSUS 3 source servers.

Consider that almost nobody is installing WSUS 2 and performing an *initial*
synchronization.

Which one would you expect to be faster?

I just came here just now wondering about this question too.

My WSUS3 has been downloading 160MB of updates _all_day_, and so far it's
taken 5 hours to get to 81MB.
By comparison, WSUS2 (in its hey day) used to come down almost half as quick
as the pipe.

A check on the firewall shows _total_ internet traffic sitting at about 20%
of our bandwidth.
CPU use on the WSUS is bugger all, < 1%.

Is there anything I can do to speed it along? (I had planned to get a lot of
patch testing done today.)

Yes.. but think back to your *initial* WSUS 2 synchronization and download!
:-)

If you know you have the bandwidth available, and you're not concerned with
saturating your Internet link, you can put BITS in foreground mode.

Really? I didn't notice it was that bad.
Possibly because I remember SUS wanted to download several GB - over a dial
up modem!

Thank you. I would like to do that.
I googled your suggestion and found "WsusDebugTool.exe
/Tool:SetForegroundDownload"

Is that tool still valid for WSUS3.0, since the database is different?
If not, how would I go about it?

Actually, I'm not sure, which is the only reason I didn't provide explicit
instructions in the previous message.

I scanned the Deployment Guide and Ops Guide and couldn't find any reference
to any *new* methodology for placing BITS in foreground mode, so, unless
something has radically changed in the server debug tool -- I would think
that it still works -- but I don't know that for a fact.
