And *WHAT* update was this?

There's only *two* updates that could possibly do that.. and the very same updates *could* do that if your server had issues consistent with the several documented in the WSUS 2.0 SP1 Release Notes (and you didn't have SP1 installed) or the WSUS 3.0 update Release Notes.
There's also a third update which, if installed, can *break* a WSUS 2.0 installation -- that would be the .NET Framework v2.0 update.

Is there an F: drive on this server? Is there supposed to be an F: drive on this server? Did there used to be an F: drive on this server?

Which does appear to be installed!
Here's the root cause of the failure: > 2007-06-29 09:08:44 Error CustomActions.Dll Failed to remove account > CEI_UPDATES\WSUS Administrators (Error 0x80004005: Unspecified error)

First, provide more specific details about your WSUS system.
[1] What version of WSUS? [2] What update did you try to install? [3] What else was installed on the system? [4] Why did the installation of the update fail? You've only provided logs for the failed REinstallation of WSUS 2.0, but that was likely doomed from the moment the update installation failed and (allegedly) took your WSUS 2.0 installation with it.
