Updates install automatically at logoff
Genie75 5/24/2007 10:02:01 PM
Hello,
We have one PC that for some strange reason, forces any uninstalled
Microsoft Updates that have been downloaded to the client, to install
automatically when the user logs off. It is set up exactly the same as our
other PCs, so I don't know why this one is doing this.
The other PC's, the updates are scheduled to install at 3:00 AM or 1 hour
after the user has logged in if it missed 3:00 AM.
Anyone know why it is doing this? It wouldn't be so bad, except it gets a
svchost.exe error, and the install of the updates hangs forever. Anyone else
ever experience this?

Are all the client XP SP2

I would sure like to know how it "forces" the install. It is the default to
"install updates and shutdown" but I know of no way to force that option. I
would like to be able to force it.

There are 10 type of people, those that understand binary and those that don't.

This is certainly an interesting scenario, given that I know of *no*
configuration option that can initiate an /installation/ during log off.

Installations can be initiated during /shutdown/ on WinXPSP2 and Win2003
systems.

Are you sure you're not observing a /reboot/ occuring during logoff, as a
result of updates previously installed?

Review the %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log to get actual
timestamps of the download/install/restart events.

Caveat. The policy to which you believe "[installs] 1 hour after the user
has logged in", is not based on the user's logon time, but is based on the
AU service startup time. That policy will trigger an installation 1 hour
after the AU service starts up, regardless of whether or not a user ever
logs onto the system.
