WSUS 3.0 Rollup Reporting
johnf 5/15/2007 6:40:02 PM
Hello,
Can anyone confirm if WSUS 3.0 will allow for Rollup Reporting when set to
autonomus mode? I have seen it documented on different websites that it
supports it under both replica and autonomus modes, but looking at the
documentation for WSUS 3.0, nowhere does it mention rollup reporting for
autonomus WSUS servers.
If it does support it, can someone explain how to set it up and how it
works? For example when generating reports, how are they assembled? It
obviously communicates with the downstream servers to gather the information.
Is a temporary table generated on the central server?
Thanks in advance!

Reporting Rollup for Autonomous Servers will only rollup the status of the
DSS Server, not the computers associated with that Server. Full Rollup is
only available on Replica DSS's

Hi Cecil,
Thanks for your reply. I am not sure I understand what you mean by it will
only rollup the status of the DSS and not the computers associated with it?
Are you saying it will only tell me what updates are approved, declined etc,
from the DSS and not give the status of computers in regards to those updates?

Not exactly. The Autonomous server will only show that it is a DSS of your
USS and report what other DSS's are reporting to it. It won't report
anything with respect to Updates or Computers. In order to get this
information you will need to make the DSS a replica and ensure that the
detailed Rollup radio button is selected on the USS.

Ok,
Would you know if the unsupported WSUS Rollup tool provided in WSUS 2.0
would provide the functionality I am looking for, and if this works with 3.0?
Or if this would be possible by accessing the API's?
Thanks

Let me track down the people who worked on the 2.0 tool and get you an

Re: WSUS 3.0 Rollup Reporting

Thanks Cecil let me know what you find. I was able to run the unsupported
rollup tool on a pilot wsus 3.0 server and import the data into the DB.
Unfortunately the targetinfo does not get populated into the xml. It seems
the methods may have changed a bit from 2.0 to 3.0 for the IComputerTarget
class.

Re: WSUS 3.0 Rollup Reporting
johnf 5/18/2007 4:29:00 PM
Hi Cecil,
I looked into this further, I was wrong. I am still having the problem, but
it appears
it is related to the IUpdateEvent.GetComputer method. It seems it is making
a call to the DB to run the stored procedure ExecuteSPGetComputerById.
Here is the log from the WsusRollupExport:

WsusRollupExport failed with the below exception!
Microsoft.UpdateServices.Administration.WsusObjectNotFoundException: The
specified item could not be found in the database.
at
Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal.DatabaseAccess.AdminDataAccess.ExecuteSPGetComputerById(String id)
at
Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal.BaseApi.ComputerTarget.GetById(String id)
at Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal.BaseApi.UpdateEvent.GetComputer()
at Microsoft.WsusTools.ExportComputerStatus.ExportData(String outputPath,
TextWriter statusWriter)
at Microsoft.WsusTools.WsusRollupTool.Main(String[] args)

Not sure if you can assist any further, but I figure I'd post this in case
anyone comes across the same problem....is the stored procedure missing?

Thanks again.

Re: WSUS 3.0 Rollup Reporting
johnf 5/21/2007 6:29:01 PM
Hi Cecil,
I did a little more investigating on this. Turns out the Rollup tool for
2.0 does not work out of the box for 3.0. It seems there is a problem in the
IUpdateEvent interface when calling the GetComputer method. I don't know
exactly where the problem lies, but fortunately there is a property
ComputerId which appears to provide the same information available in the 3.0
API not previously available in 2.0. Changing this line of code seems to
work. This may be useful to anyone else looking to use the old Rollup tool
on autonomous servers in 3.0.
Thanks.
