WSUS 3 interface shortcomings

If I have an update that is not approved, why does it show as needed on
workstation? e.g. IE7 is not compatible with quite a number of our web based
applications, so we have it approved for only one group of testing
workstations and it is not approved for any other groups because we don't
want it to install. But this means that all the other ~5000 workstations show
as needing updates, even though though for the great majority of them the
only update it thinks is needed is IE7, which we don't want to have
installed. This makes it very difficult to find workstations that actually
*do* need updates.

We can't decline IE7 because WSUS doesn't allow us approve it for one group
and decline it for others.

Hi,

I was telling them this issue when they were in Beta phase also, but
nothing happened. I'm having the same problem, and also with IE7. You
also can't disable IE7, because in this way you cannot apply to the
computers which need it :((

Curious for some resolution.

Your point has been noted, discussed, and is an issue in the WSUS 3 RTM.

Part of the issue is that the term "Needed" really means "Not Yet Installed"
in WSUS 3.0 parlance.

Another part of the issue is that the auto-detect-on-always scenario wasn't
taken fully into consideration when the reporting logic was written, thus
the issue you're dealing with now. The good news is that a 3rd party is
writing an alternate reporting module that will address this issue.
Unfortunately, I have no information on release dates for the product, or
what pricing may be involved.
