Concerning studying for the 70-290 .. first objective would be to determine if the exam has been revised to include any =WSUS= content at all. Last I heard, according to the 2nd Edition MSPress MCSA/MCSE Training Kit for 70-290, the exam still tested only SUS.
Furthermore, having just read that lesson last night (I'm also prepping for the 70-290), I don't recall anything in the section concerning comprehensive backup procedures for IIS/WSUS/SQL, though I believe backup of IIS is a testable component.
Having said that, though, for operational purposes, here's what you should do to get a full backup of a WSUS server.
[1] Use IISAdmin to make a backup of the IIS Metabase. [2] Run NTBackup and select [a] The \WSUS folder, and [b] C:\Inetpub, and [c] C:\Program Files\Update Services, and [d] C:\Windows\System32\Inetsrv\MetaBack, and [e] the System State
From that one tape, you should be able to fully restore an entire functioning WSUS environment in one pass, after rebuilding a core Windows operating system installation, and installing IIS.
The only requirement for restoring on an alternate server is that the alternate server have the same MACHINENAME as the machine originally backed up. If not, the IIS restore will not work correctly.
Now... also.... consider this: In most cases, rebuilding a WSUS server from scratch (e.g. reinstalling WSUS, configuring, synchronizing, and downloading content unattended), will take less human resources time than babysitting a tape restore of a complete WSUS Server -- and about the same amount of *clock* time.
