Hide the Windows Update Icon
bacot 6/20/2007 12:26:32 AM
Hi all,

How can we stop the yellow Windows update icon from appearing in the system
tray when I login as a local admin?

I want to be able to push the update from the WSUS server silently without
the user knowing that the update is in progress. The problem that I am having
at the moment is that some of the users are local administrator of their PCs.
When the WSUS server pushes the update, the windows update icon will
automatically pop up on the system tray on the user's PC. I want to make this
icon disappear and still have the Windows update applied. Any ideas?

Userconfiguration/Admin Templates/windows/Windows Update > Remove all
Windows Update Links > Activate.

Hi, Thanks for the reply.

I could not find the the key that you've mentioned. Do you mean to use the
following key

"Userconfiguration/Admin Templates/Windows components/Windows Update/Remove
access to
use all windows update feature"

I tried this key, but the windows update icon is still appearing when I
login to the PC as local administrator.

am I looking at the right key?

Yes, its the right key. Are you logon as "Administrator" or as an User
with Local Admin Rights? If second, you have to watch, the Userobject
must found in the right OU, where the User-GPO will linked.

By "key" I believe you mean "group policy setting"?

User group policy set in a domain GPO does not apply when you are logged into
any local account, including the local administrator; so if you set the group
policy in the domain, this is the problem. Try setting it on the local machine
instead. There's no shortcut for local group policy, you'll need to start mmc
and add the "group policy object editor" snapin to the console.

Hi Winfried and Harry,

I tried both of your solutions, but the windows update icon keeps appearing
for some reasons when I login as a local admin or logging as a user that has
a local admin right.

Any other solution I can try?
