WSUS 3.0 upgrade
Eric B. 7/8/2007 1:14:01 AM
I did an upgrade from 2.0 to 3.0 and everything looks like it went smoothly
except for the fact that now all the workstations in the console have yellow
triangles next to them saying that they need updates.

What is the website now after the upgrade? It used to be http:\\severname
but that doesn't seem to work anymore. This is what the Group Policy item
points too which might be why none of the computers are getting the updates.

Please help. Thank you.

That would be an indication of all of the updates that never got installed
on all of those workstations under WSUS 2.0 because the updates were not set
to "Detect Only", and thus never detected as needed.

There is no website. The application is now managed via MMC. You'll find
this information in the Readme, the Release Notes, the Getting Started
Guide, the Deployment Guide.

The group policy still points to the website, which contains all of the WSUS
webservices. There's simply no web-based administration utility.

Thanks for the information Lawrence.

How do I install these updates now on this version of WSUS with the
computers that have the yellow triangle next to them?

Well... you'll need to identify which updates are "Needed" that you've not
yet approved for installation.

Best way to do that is to go to the "All Updates" node, and filter on
"Unapproved" and "Needed", get the list of unapproved but needed updates,
select ALL, and approve for ALL COMPUTERS.

If you've got some computers that you do *not* want to install any updates
on, make sure you set their particular groups to "Not Approved (not
inherited)" before approving the update for "All Computers".

Then... sit back and watch 'em update. :-)

Thanks again Lawrence for your quick response to my question.

Is there someone I can talk to about this? Certain things within this seem
confusing to me as compared to the other versions?

Please let me know when you get a chance. Thank you.

To be honest, Eric, there's nothing fundamentally different in the process
using WSUS 3.0 than there was in the process using WSUS 2.0, except that the
"Detect Only" setting for individual updates in WSUS 2.0 is now the
system-wide default in WSUS 3.0.

Other that that, the *processes* are identical.
[a] Identified the *needed* updates
[b] Ensure the *needed* updates are approved for installation.
[c] Ensure the *needed* updates are installed on the destination
systems.

Other than that, there are several documents at

Lawrence,

I read through all these documents and they are helpful but don't totally
answer all the questions that I have.

Would you be able to email me so that I can ask you some stuff?

My email is EBlonder[ at ]newmarkkf.com.

Thanks.
