WSUS on a VM
Eric B. 6/25/2007 7:21:00 PM
Can WSUS 3.0 be installed on a Virtual Machine? Are there any known side
effects for doing this?

If I do this how would I export the data from my WSUS 2.0 server onto this
new 3.0 sevrer?

Thank you.

Yes. Not for me.

Absolutely.

Nope. I've installed dozens of WSUS servers (v2 and v3) in VMs for the
purpose of testing.

However.... BIG caution... I would *not* install a WSUS server in a VM where
there was any intention of maintaining a local content store. Or, put
another way, only use VMs for WSUS servers that will not maintain a local
content store. In addition, ideally, the VM would be IIS/front-end only, and
the database would be on a physical back-end database server.

I'd also only suggest doing it in scenarios expecting a very light client
load. Managing VPN-based clients is an excellent scenario for this type of
deployment, where the VPN-based clients actually get content directly from
microsoft.com, not from the WSUS server.

Testing and training are the other two scenarios well suited for VM use.

Exactly the same as you would if the WSUS 3.0 server were a physical box!

Thank you Lawrence.

What are the steps for doing an upgrade from 2.0 to 3.0?

Are there any gotchas to look out for?

[a] Read the documentation.

[b] Download the WSUS3Setupx86.exe installer.

[c] Run the WSUS3Setupx86.exe installer on your WSUS 2.0 server, and follow
the instructions on the screen.

It's that easy! :-)

Yes, we have a 3.0 server running on our test VMWare ESX environment,
it works fine and am using this as the initial pilot environment for
new security updates.

If you are running VMWare, you can use their VMWare Converter tool to
migrate the entire physical 2.0 server into a VM. The only problem I
had in doing this was that I had initially renamed the server's
computer name to reflect our test domain naming convention, and the
WSUS 3.0 upgrade would not play ball at all because the server name in
the SUSDB no longer matched the Windows server name. However, after
renaming back to the original name (in a workgroup at that stage) the
upgrade completed successfully.

You would need to give the WSUSContent partition an appropriate amount
of disk space in the VM in order to avoid any out of space issues (not
a problem for us as the test ESX cluster is attached to our SAN). You
would definately want to not have updates in all languages downloaded
if at all possible!

In our case, I went from a 50GB D: partition on the production 2.0
server (with 13GB of updates downloaded) to a 25GB D: partition on the
VM.
