Windows Update no longer working 0x80004002 salto <solidpurple[ at ]gmail.com> 6/13/2007 5:08:49 PM Windows automatic update is no longer working. Since June 10 I get 0x80004002 related errors. Then today I tried to update manually from the windows update site, which brings me in an endless loop. The message after selecting quick update is that necessary registrations and files are not on the computer, I am asked to correct this, I continue, Windows is downloading and registering the files (tells the webpage), after which I am redirected to the update page again. I select quick update, get the same error that the necessary registrations and files are not on the computer. This happens continuously. I registered the servicesregsvr32 /s wuapi.dll, regsvr32 /s wups.dll, regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll, regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll, regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll, regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll, regsvr32 /s jscript.dll, regsvr32 / s atl.dll, regsvr32 /s softpub.dll, regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll I reregistered regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll, regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll, regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll, regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll, regsvr32 /s wups.dll, regsvr32 / s wups2.dll, regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll both attempts between net stop wuauserv/net start wuauserv I rebooted, before and after, no errors in the eventlogs Then I tried force install WUA with WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe / wuforce and after that tried to update from Windows Update website. Again, I am in the same loop: I select quick scan, get the error message that necessary registrations and files are not on the computer, I am asked to correct this, I continue, files are downloaded, files are registered according to the progressbar on the webpage, I am redirected to the update page, I select quick update but the same error message about missing files appears. I found some advice at the following site that has helped in my case: http://msmvps.com/blogs/athif/archive/2006/05/17/Error-0x80004002.aspx I had to both re-create the datastore and reinstall the client; I also used the /resetauthorization switch when running detection after completing those two steps. I will say I have not worked with Vista clients yet, so I don't know if the process will work in that case. Good luck!
