Hi,
I've WSUS 3.0 running and until end of May all clients have connected sucessfully and taken updates. However since thay have failed with the above error when trying to connect to my wsus server.
When trying to URL in question directly in my browser, it get the following message screen:
Server Error in '/' Application.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The resource cannot be found. Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly.
Requested URL: /SimpleAuthWebService/SimpleAuth.asmx
The file is on the disk in the place where it is supposed to be but the default web service can't see it. I have tried a lot of things and probably messed up the settings in the default web service, but it has not changed anything. Still no connection.
The WSUS server is W2003 SBS and clients are a W2K server and both XP and W2K workstations. No Vistas yet in my local network.
NB! The Wsus server syncs nicely with the MS Update server.
Does anyone have any idea of what's going on ?
Regards Soren

This sounds pretty easy, actually. It was working, and then it stopped working, and you know approximately when that was, and the error that is now being received (0x80244019) is an HTTP '404' error -- which means somebody did something they weren't supposed to do on the WSUS server.
> When trying to URL in question directly in my browser, it get the > following > message screen: > > Server Error in '/' Application. > -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > The resource cannot be found. > Description: HTTP 404.
That's consistent with the error received by the WUA.

Here's the answer. You're using SBS. There is *no* /simpleauthwebservice in the Default Web Site, because on a Small Business Server, the WSUS webservices are installed in the alternate virtual server on port 8530.
> 2007-07-08 07:32:05:179 896 38c Agent * WSUS server: http://LSC-IIS > 2007-07-08 07:32:05:179 896 38c Agent * WSUS status server: > http://LSC-IIS
Looks like somebody "reconfigured" your policy with an incorrect URL. For SBS environments the port number must be specified. Reconfigure your URL to http://LSC-IIS:8530

Hi Lawrence,
Sorry for this late response. It's holiday times here in Europe so those still not on vacation (like me) are quite busy ;-)
Your responce of course did the trick. I do not know why the portnumer was missing but once I put it backn in, in the group policy, the server almost immediately started taking the waiting downloads.
However, being eager to get it workign again, I tried a lot of possibilities before I asked you guys, and I'm afraid I have messed it up so that almost nothing works anymore. The servename LSC-IIS with the 8530 port number points to the WSUS adm site and not the default Website which is on port 80. Messing around in WSUS Adm site, I've changed virtual directories and access rights and currently no services are working. When I enable anonymous access to the site I can use the WSUS Adm facility, but the none of the service are working, and when I disable the anonymous access all services apart for Self-Update is working again, and I cant access the WSUS dfacility any more. Nevertheless the server is still receiving updates. The clients are not.
I guess the easiest is the remove and the re-install wsus completely, maybe even ISS at the same time. Or do you know an easier way ?
Many thanks in any case. At least my server is taking the updates and the clients I have so far allowed direct access to the MS update site to be able to keep them updated. So a lot of extra work but at least no worries.

Try this: What are the correct IIS and NTFS permissions for WSUS? http://wsusinfo.onsitechsolutions.com/articles/016.htm
The article was originally written for WSUS 2.0 (and needs to be updated for WSUS 3.0), but the basics are there, and should get you going.
Beyond that, there's also a full listing of all required permissions in an Appendix of the WSUS 3.0 Operations Guide.

You do *not* want to remove IIS on an SBS2003 system!!!
However, removing and reinstalling WSUS 3.0 may well be the best solution.
Keep the database and the content files, and the uninstall/reinstall should only take about 15-20 minutes.

Everything you need for WSUS is at http://www.microsoft.com/wsus
And, almost everything else is at http://wsusinfo.onsitechsolutions.com .....
