WSUS 3 New Installation
Marwan Kandeel 5/7/2007 5:52:03 AM
Hi All,
I've a problem installing WSUS 3 on Win Server 2K3 SP2. When I run the
exe file I get the following log:

2007-05-07 08:34:19 Error MWUSSetup ParseCommandLine: Failed
to open SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Update Services\Server\Setup registry key (Error
0x80070002: The system cannot find the file specified.)
2007-05-07 08:34:23 Error MWUSSetup DoInstall:
ParseCommandLine failed (Error 0x80041453)

Any comments?

It appears you have old WSUS 3 is installed but the regkey
([HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Update Services\Server\Setup]) is
gone, which is necessary for the reinstallation process to decide to kick
off either an uninstall or an upgrade as appropriate.

You may try using ARP in control panel to remove original WSUS install
leaving DB and everything else you want to leave behind, then reinstall with
original WSUS version. Then you will recover original WSUS with regkey all
created.

Hi Fei,
I have uninstalled the old WSUS already. I think the uninstallation
deleted that reg key. Any help on how to restore the key and create it
manually?

It is not supported to manually hack around regkey. But for your case, you
may work around by installing WSUS 3.0 on another machine, then export wsus
regkey and reimport into the failing machine.
Note if you have originally installed WSUS 3.0 Beta, then use WSUS 3.0 beta
on another machine; if WSUS 3.0 RC was originally installed, then use WSUS
3.0 RC.

The regkey value may not be exactly the same as original install after
import (it is not an exact copy of original regkeys). But it should be good
enough to solve your issue.

Also note this workaround may not work for your upgrade (if it is), as the
upgrade needs to read *original* value from regkey of previous WSUS version,
which however is not guranteed to be the same after this workaround.

If you just want to uninstall original WSUS cleanly, you may just do
"WSUSSetup.exe /u" from command line.

RE: WSUS 3 New Installation
Martin 6/1/2007 2:01:03 PM
Hi Marwan

I had exactly the same problem. After uninstalling WSUS 3.0 I could'nt
reinstall
it and got always that error with the registry key.
For me the following worked:
I did an installation with this command line from a dos box, and wow - the
wsus installed without any problem.

WSUS3Setupx86.exe CONTENT_LOCAL=1 CONTENT_DIR=f:\WSUS
SQLINSTANCE_NAME=%COMPUTERNAME% DEFAULT_WEBSITE=1 CREATE_DATABASE=1

Good luck
