Running WSUS 3.0 with HP SIM 5.1 SP1
Domm42 5/29/2007 10:45:03 PM
Hello,

I am currently running WSUS 2 on the same server as HP System Insight
Manager 4.2. Each one is running on a separate instance of MSDE 2000. I
want to upgrade to WSUS 3.0 and HP SIM 5.1 SP1, but I want to make sure that
Windows Internal Database and MSDE 2000 can co-exist on the same server
without any issues before I do this. Can anyone help me out on this one?
Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you.

They can coexist; however, before we travel any further down this road, you
need to clarify whether you're using =MSDE= (on Win2000) or =WMSDE= (on
Win2003).

If MSDE on Win2000, then you're dead in the water anyway, as WSUS v3 will
not install on Windows 2000.

If WMSDE on Win2003, then WSUS v3 will convert the WMSDE installation for
WSUS into a Windows Internal Database installation. It will leave other
application-specific instances of MSDE untouched.

Sorry for the confusion, Running Windows 2003 Server. Thank you for the
quick reply.

Just one more question. Is there a specific order I should be doing these
updates in? I was considering uninstalling HP SIM 4.2 completely and
upgrading WSUS, then performing a clean install of HP SIM 5.1 SP1. If this
is the preferred method, I will do it, but I would rather be able to simply
upgrade both WSUS and HPSIM if possible.

Not really. They're two completely independent operations.

It's even arguable that you could do them simultaneously, but I wouldn't
recommend that. :-)

This is a reasonable approach, but unless there's a real /need/ to uninstall
the old version of HP SIM to install the new version, the uninstallation is
not necessary to satisfy any needs of WSUS. When you install WSUS v3, it
will automagically find your WSUS v2 database on the WMSDE engine, install
the Windows Internal Database, and migrate the WSUS database from WMSDE to
WID.

I can think of no reason why this wouldn't be a successful approach, but the
variable is the HP SIM upgrade, as I know nothing about that specific
upgrade process.
