WSUS 3 Upgrade Fails
"Ohmcp" <ohmcp[ at ]nospam.lycos.com> 5/19/2007 2:17:08 AM
Anyone encounter a problem like this...
Upgrading from RC to WSUS3. Upgrade fails.... tells you to look at log.

Error log reports ...

SQL version is not Yukon. Yukon version 9.00.2047. SQL instance version
9.00.1399.06
2006-10-12 15:34:31 Error MWUSSetup CSetupDriver::LaunchSetup:
Setup is cancelled or an error occurred (Error 0x80070642: User cancelled
installation.)

I have verified that I'm running 9.00.2047. I really dont want to uninstall
and reinstall SQL here. I'm running SQL 05 standard. Anyone else encounter
this?

much thnx...

WSUS requires SQL Server 2005 =SP1= to be installed. I'd guess from the
reported build number that you've not installed SP1.

But WSUS *thinks* that you're running v9.00.1399.06 -- so the necessary
question would be "Why?" does WSUS think that?

I'd start by reapplying Service Pack 1. Also, make sure you've applied it to
*all* instances, and *all* functions (Database Engine, Analysis Services,
Integration Services, etc.)

LG,
thanks for the response.
SP1 installed. Installation would not complete. Dug into a previous post
and it mentioned something about drive compression. Took off the drive
compression and WSUS installed 1st shot.

thanks again for your response

Voila!

Drive compression is not supported in *any* SQL Server installation. Has
never been! :-)

To be honest, I don't understand why, with the cost and size of drives
these days, the anyone would even *consider* implementing
compression.... It slows things down and creates another single point of
failure.

Hank Arnold

And yet.... at least once a week, we see somebody here who doesn't have
enough free space on the C: drive to install Win2003 Service Pack 2.

Go figger!

Due to the desire to keep the Boot partition small at 8GB or less. A mad desire
when an 80GB drive get be dedicated to the boot/system partition for $100 or so.
