What WSUS Client Application?
"Will" <westes-usc[ at ]noemail.nospam> 6/20/2007 3:23:29 AM
We installed WSUS 3.0 (our first WSUS install) and got the administrator
tool working. We took a Windows XP test client, added it to a test OU, and
attached the appropriate Windows Update GPO to that test OU. After group
policy update on the test client, the appropriate WindowsUpdate key is
created in registry with correct settings. But the client is not grabbing
any of the Update files on the WSUS server.

What confuses me the most about WSUS is where is the WSUS update client, and
is this some kind of command line tool? How can I get it installed on a
Windows 2000 and Windows XP client?

Is there any URL I can use from a browser on a targeted client that will
allow me to have a similar Windows Update experience from the client against
our WSUS server as what the user would experience going directly to the
Windows Update web site? Having that kind of graphical web-based
interaction between the client and the WSUS server would be highly
desirable.

Have a look in WindowsUpdate.log in Directory %windir%. Do you have
updates approved for installation? Are the updates downloaded to the
WSUS?

W2K must have install SP4 + XP must have installed SP1 minimum. The
WU-Client comes with the OS. You can force connecting from the client
to WSUS: wuauclt /detectnow and/or wuauclt /reportnow.

You can test from a client: http://WSUS-SERVER/selfupdate/wuident.cab
and/or http://WSUS-SERVER:8530/selfupdate/wuident.cab
Comes the Download dialog?
