Remote Users under WSUS
Brandon 7/10/2007 3:06:01 PM
Our company is implementing WSUS and has a number of remote notebook users
who vary from sporadic VPN connections to no connection on the VPN. They all
are sales users and need updates.
Right now we have them setup with no update scheme ** BAD I know**. They
update at their leisure from MS via Windows Update.
I want to incorporate them into our WSUS setup, but dragging the updates
across a VPN connection is not really feasible for many of them. We
currently have a WSUS setup with defined groups so that users get approved
updates and the AUTO REBOOT is supressed.
Is there a way to setup a a specific group of users to use the existing WSUS
server to get the approved list of updates and connect to Windows Update
while having all my other groups still connect to the WSUS Server to get
their updates?

I guess I'm looking for a way to maintain the standardization that we have
put in place with approving and reporting while allowing my remote users to
go to MS for their downloads since our server is unavailable, then check in
when they can.

Create a replica server configured to not store the content locally - get
updates from MS and point your laptops to it using a GPO.

Also, this is an *excellent* deployment scenario for running WSUS in a
Virtual Machine on VS2005 or VMWare.
