Jeff, the best way to get *your* existing SQL Server =2005= environment up to speed is to follow the instructions as documented in the WSUS 3 Deployment Guide.
Essentially that involves: [a] Uninstalling WSUS 2.0 from the back-end server. [b] Upgrading WSUS 2.0 to WSUS 3.0 on the front-end server. [c] Completing the steps as documented in Appendix B to link the front-end server to the back-end server.
The WSUS install is no longer required to be run on the back-end server. This is discussed in further detail in the Deployment Guide. -- Lawrence Garvin, M.S., MCTS, MCP Independent WSUS Evangelist MVP-Software Distribution (2005-2007) https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/profile=30E00990-8F1D-4774-BD62-D095EB07B36E
