WSUS 3: How to resync when a update is missing?
"Arnd Iffland" <iffland[ at ]rdv.de> 6/15/2007 8:52:01 AM
Hi,

i have no idea why, but in my list of updates on our WSUS server is no
..Net Framework 2.0 for germany listed.
I found this problem because we now need to have the framework on the
clients and i wonder why it naver has been installed.
The updates for the frameworks are listed.

Is there a way to resync the update information so that i can approcve
the framework?
I tried it with WSUSTIL.EXE reset but this doesn't help.

And i don't want to delete everything...

Regards,

Arnd

The .NET Framework is classified as an "Update" in your products and
classifications area. If you do not want to download all of the "Update"
classifications, and you have WSUS 3.0, you can import this update directly
from the catalog site.

From the Updates Home page select the link for "Import Updates...". This
will take you to the Catalog site. put .NET framework 2.0 into the search
box and click search.
Once you find what you want, then add it to your basket.
Once you are satisfied with your selection, go into the basket and there
will be a nice check box that says "import into WSUS" click this link and
there you go you have the specific update that you need, without all of the
other extemporaneous "Updates"

Thanks for your answer.

After searching the catalog, i think that the problem is not a missing
update, but wrong information in the update.

In WSUS the .Net Framework 2.0 Update (KB829019) is marked as not
installable because the language of the update is not selected.
The update information in WSUS says that this update is for english
only, but the text in the catalog says that KB829019 is for other
languages also.
I only have selected german updates in the language options.

How can i approve the update?

Best regards,

Arnd

The update (.NET Framework v2.0) is certainly available in multiple
languages, but I'm pretty certain that the update packages are language
specific.

If your WSUS metadata states that the update is only for =English= (as does
mine), but your WSUS server is only configured to sync GERMAN language
updates, then I would venture an educated guess that the wrong update
package got linked into the German content.

For reference purposes, the GUID of the .NET Framework v2.0 (KB829019)
update on my English-only system is:
46a0b6f7-b283-45f8-9ccb-c8e3b4ec332c

> How can i approve the update?

You cannot if it's actually the ENGLISH language installation package, and
not the GERMAN language package.

Given the evidence we have at this point, it would be useful to see what
appears in the metadata on a WSUS server configured to sync English =and=
German updates. I have a WSUS 3.0 server sitting in a VM. I'll fire it up,
reconfig it to sync English/German, and only "Updates" for "Win2003", and
see what I get in terms of content == specifically what the Update ID
(GUIDs) are for the .NET Framework v2.0 (KB829019) updates.

Here's what I've found.
46a0b6f7-b283-45f8-9ccb-c8e3b4ec332c is the English language version.

d33194b5-f3ea-4907-a956-489aa497566d is the multi-language version,
including German.

I got both when syncing for English =and= German.

This afternoon I will reset the VM, sync only German, and see what I get.

Following up on this post, based on recent test results.

Specifically, this is the English-language package that is marked as not
installable because you're synchronizing German only content.

There should also be a second entry for "Microsoft .NET Framework v2.0: x86
(KB829019)" for all non-English languages. This is the update you need to
approve.

My testing indicates there are *two* update packages synchronized on a
non-English system. You need to find and approve the update for the
non-English languages. The English-only package cannot be approved for
installation (even, apparently, if the OS that WSUS is installed on is an
English-language operating system installation!!).
