Which WSUS3
muffet 6/12/2007 10:20:00 PM
Hi,

I know that I am proberbly missing the point but which WSUS3 do I need to
use on a Windows 2003 sp2 set up I have tried looking it up and there are
two:-
WSUS3Setup64.exe 81.8MB and WSUS3Setupx86.exe 79.4MB

If someone could please point me in the right direction I would be graetful.
I no sooner get one thing sorted out when I have to start again, it never
ends.

One is for 32 bit "x86" computers, one is for 64 bit.

If you have a 64bit machine, you'd probably know it.
Pentium 4, Core2 Duo, etc are 32 bit x86 hardware.

Dave,
Thanks for trying to help me.

I have tried twice to download WSUS3 setupx64.exe it took over 30mins to do
this task; so I waisted over an hour.
I can download so far but it tells me that it does not reconise my system.

I have WindowsXP Home Edition sp2
If anyone can tell me more, about what is going wrong I would appreciate it.

Which ever one is appropriate for your server. x86 if you have an x86
CPU, or 64 if you have a 64-bit CPU.

Firstly, you need to install it on your Windows Server, not Windows XP.
You initially mentioned you had Windows Server 2003 SP2.

I believe you will want the 32 bit version, to install the Administration
component on your XP, and most likely for your server too.

This is not quite correct. It depends on the variant of the installed OS
(64 or 32 bit), not on the CPU directly. Of course, to run a 64bit OS,
you need a 64bit CPU, but on the vast majority of 64bit CPUs today runs
a 32bit OS.

Massimo

One is for 32 bit OS (which runs perfectly well on 64 bit computers),
the other for 64 bit OS.

Core 2 Duo is a 64bit CPU.

Ahh, true enough.
