Using DNS to disabls
Mark B 5/23/2007 2:16:01 AM
Does anyone know if this is possible using Windows 2003 DNS? If so, please be
as specific as possible. I am trying to disable my users from using Windows
Messenger at the server level, rather than go machine to machine...

No DNS cannot do that. Windows Messenger is a NetBIOS
application.

You can do it with a GPO, or just by disabling Messenger in the Services
control panel of each machine.

Windows Messenger (legacy application) is NOT the same as "Microsoft
Messenger"
(on the Internet.)

from what I understand, Group Policy is not reliable for this, and the whole
reason to block it at DNS is so I dont have to resort to going to EVERY
machine and trying to outfox users.

GPOs will happily turn off ANY SERVICE so just use it to do that.

I believe Mark may be referring to Windows Live Messenger, which is an
"upgrade" for MSN Messenger.
Yes, you can create those records to block your DNS server from resolving
these names to the MSN Messenger servers. It does not disable your users
from using MSN Messenger, a savvy computer user will find a way around it,
if they really want to use it.
