Without seeing the exact message from nslookup, it sounds like you may not
have a reverse lookup zone and PTR for the DNS Server's IP address. It could
also be that the DNS server is not listening on that IP address.
Using the DNS Management Console, bring up the properties sheet of the DNS
server, on the Interfaces tab, make sure the server is listening on the IP
address of the server. While in the console, check that you have a reverse
lookup zone for your subnet. Depending on your IP addresses and subnet mask
and whether the console is in Normal or Advanced View, you should see a
reverse lookup zone like "192.168.1.x" (Normal view, with
192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 Subnet/Mask) or "1.168.192.in-addr.arpa" (Advanced
View with the same subnet ID)

Make sure your forward lookup zone is in place, named correctly, allows only
secure updates and has been populated by the DCs' records. If you let
DCPromo set up DNS for you and this is Win2k3, you should have two zones,
one for "DNSDomainName" and one for "_msdcs.DNSDomainName"

thanks for fast reply, the dns is working properly, the problem was that the
previous domain have been named pippo.local, and the new domain pippo.local,
now the old server have joined the old pippo.local... then i disjoin on
workgroup and then i test with nslookup the dns functionality but i receive
always no response, but if i install a new machine with the same ip and i run
nslookup all works fine.
my needs is that i won't to reinstall my old machines!!!!

best regards
Giulio
