DNS Forwarder
"SBN via WinServerKB.com" <u32166[ at ]uwe> 5/19/2007 7:18:55 AM
Hey guys in our network we have 3 servers 2 Windows domain servers (Main-172.
16.0.3 and Secondary-172.16.0.3) and 1 Linux-172.16.0.1 acting as a firewall.
Our linux is installed with SQUID web proxy cache and all our clients
browsers are using proxy server (172.16.0.1:80) default gateway:172.16.0.1
DNS:172.16.0.2,172.16.1.3.

I have read about DNS forwarding and also want to implement it if possible in
our network. I tried to set it up, so i choose our secondary server to be the
forwarder and i configure our main server in the DNS properties to point to
the secondary server as its forwarder. Now how do i configure our clients so
that they can use the DNS forwarder? and did i setup the DNS forwarder
correctly?

What does that secondary KNOW that the primary doesn't?

Typically you forward from ALL of your internal DNS servers to either the
Gateway/Firewall DNS Server or the ISP DNS server to resolve the Internet
efficiently and safely.

You don't.

Clients use the Internal DNS server (set) which then (typically) forwards to
a
DNS Server (set) which can resolve OTHER names, e.g., the INTERNET.

Maybe, but we don't know why you were forwarding to this secondary so
maybe you did it wrong.

Forwarding is about the DNS server being able to use a DIFFERENT DNS
Server (i.e., the Forward is the additional DNS Server) to resolve names the
original server does NOT know.

use Open DNS for Forwarders , it is much fater than any ISP DNS servers
DNS Primary 208.67.222.222
DNS Sec 208.67.220.220

Also, in AD here how to configure DNS servers

Configure the Preferred DNS server in TCP/IP properties on each Domain
Controller to use itself as Primary DNS Server. http://smtp25.blogspot.com/2007/05/do-not-configure-dns-client-settings-on_818.html
