Problems with DNS-replication and DNS Event ID 4515
"Per-Torben Sørensen" <mspts[ at ]ventelo.net> 5/23/2007 8:57:47 AM
Hello everyone.

I got the event ID 4515 and I've been reading
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/867464 a few times now.

The subdomain doesn't replicate the contoso.com zone but I'm a bit unsure
how to see what zone to delete. Looking on one of the DC's in the subdomain,
the CN=MicrosoftDNS,DC=ForestDNSZones, DC=contoso, DC=com has a zone with
loads of records (no surprise there) but how do I see if this is the correct
zone replicated from the parent domain (which I wanna keep) or the
out-of-sync zone that needs to be deleted? I tried to look for the zone
serial number but I couldn't find it in ADSIedit.

In DC=DomainDNSZones,DC=contoso,DC=com I only see a record of
CN=MicrosoftDNS (NOT a container) is this the one I should delete then? I
can't see any content in there as it is not a container.

I'm very confused here and I don't want to delete anything unless I'm 100%
sure I'm deleting the right zone.

The goal is to get zone transfers back on track between contoso.com and it's
subdomain and having forest-wide replication. in the sub-domain it's on
domain-wide repl and I'm not allowed to chage it because of this conflict.

Please help me if you can.

Regards
Per-Torben Sørensen

If you want Forest Wide Replication, Delete the DomainDNSZones object.

That failed miserabely.

WhenI troed to delete the
CN=microsoftDNS,DC=DomainDNSZones,DC=contoso,DC=com, it pops up with "The
specified directory attribute or value does not exist".

Any help??

You can use my non-fail method for fixing this conflict, point all DCs to
the DC that has the good zone in DNS. Then on that DC, on the zone
properties sheet, General tab, click on the Change button next to Type:
Active Directory-Integrated, clear the check from the Store the zone in
Active Directory, click OK, then OK again.
In AD Site and Services, Expand to NTDS Settings, and right click on the
Connections in the Right pane and Select Replicate now.
Then using ADSI Edit, connect to DC=ForestDNSZones, DC=yourdomain, DC=com
and connect to DC=DomainDNSZones, DC=yourdomain, DC=com Open the
CN=MicrosoftDNS container in each of these and delete any objects with the
zone name. In AD User and Computers in Advanced Features view, expand System
and click on MicrosoftDNS, delete any objects with the zone name. Force a
Replication again, and using the DNS management console to verify the zone
is gone from All DCs except the one you converted to a Standard Primary.
After you verify this right change the Standard Primary zone to be Stored in
Active Directory, and force a replication cycle.

After the zone has fully replicated according the replication scope you set
you can once again start using any of these DCs in any order for DNS.

I have found that if the need comes to move a zone from one Replication
partition to another, if you first change it to a Standard Primary, force
replication, then put it back in AD in the Partition you are moving it to,
you can usually avert the zone conflict errors.
