Missing printers in Forward lookup Zones
Tore 5/25/2007 5:45:02 AM
At some point new printers stopped showing up in Forward lookup Zones. Any
idea how this could happen? Printers are set up with an active DHCP, and the
ip address is reserved against the mac address.

In DHCP we use the setting "Update DNS only if DHCP client requests", but I
tried the "Always update DNS" option. When I restarted the printer DNS was
updated. What could have happened when the old setting stoped working? Could
this be a permission issue?

Did you change the zone to allow only secure updates?

I don't know when it happened, but yes we use "only secure updates".

Then printers, which cannot Authenticate with AD, will not be able to update
the zone on their own, they would have to Authenticate before DNS updates
would be allowed. This is where DHCP comes in, the DHCP server will do the
Authentication and DNS Registrations for the printers. If the printers do
not know how to ask DHCP to update DNS, then you must use "Always update
DNS" and "Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records for DHCP clients that do
not request updates"

I had exactly the same problem last week, in my environment we have around
100 printer in diffrent sites using different DHCP servers, after setting the
"always update" option in each DHCP server, printers had their DNS records
recreated. I wonder why it happened, it was working before with "Update DNS
only if DHCP client requests" option, also printers are configured with DDNS.

Very strange
