Netbios Resolution Question
hallen.eaglesct[ at ]gmail.com 6/25/2007 4:21:56 PM
I've searched the web for a while to the answer to this question, and
can't seem to find anything.

Currently, there's a program that, once installed, requires an entry
to the hosts file of each individual PC. I know that there's some way
to configured this in DNS (vs. hosts file), I just don't know where or
how.

The entry in the hosts file is:
pqrsserver 192.168.11.20

This entry is used by different clients on different domains, so I
can't use the FQDN (AFAIK).

I have tried adding PQRSSERVER as a fowarder in 2003 server (with the
corrosponding IP), but it doesn't seem to work (did a flushdns,
registerdns).

If any other info is needed, please let me know and TIA!

Can you not just create a record for the pqrsserver in a DNS zone that you
control?

(Still learning this stuff) How would I do that, and what record type
would I pick?

One last think, would it automatically append my domain info
(thelab.local)? If so, this is no good.

If you don't (e.g in a browser) or can't (e.g in a legacy client) specifiy
the FQDN, and if the client does not find it on the local network, then it
will append it's own domain zone(s) and try DNS.
Why is thelab.local no good? Is it because the clients are not in this dns
domain? If so, you could create the Host record in their own domain zone.
You can also specify the domain names to append, in the client network
properties.
If you can't do that either, you could consider creating a WINS record.
Lots of options: it depends on exactly what the problem is,

The computer I'm trying to access my not be on a domain. The most I
can tell you is the name of the machine (pqrsserver) and the IP
(192.168.11.20).

The domain we have setup in a test area is "thelab.local". The machine
I'm trying to add is NOT a part of this domain (pqrsserver).

I guess with the machine not being in the same domain, DNS is out. I
guess I could try WINS, never really used it before. Any hints?

Thanks.

All you are trying to do is find a way to convert a client request
("pqrsserver") into an IP address. It does not matter what "domain" the
machine is "in".
Can you describe how the clients would request the "pqrsserver" resource?
You can just create a host record in the DNS domain of the clients. Is there
a reason you can't do that?

It does not matter that pqrsserver is not a member of your domain, add a
host record named pqrsserver to the domain's zone listed in the DNS Suffix
search list of your client.

For example: thelab.local is in your DNS suffix search list, add the record
named pqrsserver, with IP 192.168.11.20 to the thelab.local forward lookup
zone. When a client tries to resolve pqrsserver, the DNS client service
appends thelab.local, finds the record and returns the IP.
