DNS How-to...
Steven Sinclair 5/24/2007 1:46:02 PM
Windows Server 2003 EE R2

We just had our IT person quit, leaving me responsible for all things IT.

If I need to add an "A" record to my DNS server which would point to my mail
server, and then add an "MX" record that points to the aforementioned "A"
record, how would I do that? Mail server is 10.1.1.50.

Thanx.

You would need both an A record and a MX record. Create an MX record that
points to your mail server, say mail.anydomain.com. Now you must create an A
record that will associate an IP address with your mail server name. In the
DNS MMC, choose the forward lookup zone for the mail server and then right
click and you will see the choices for a new MX record, A record and so on.

Here is a link that will explain in detail:

Thanks, Rob. I was able to turn this into a script and save a lot of time.

dnscmd local-dns.server.com /recordadd zone hostname 192.168.1.2
