How to restore connection with hosts file?
Mike Gale 5/3/2007 9:40:00 PM
Hi,

I tested something called Tor yesterday. (Inter alia it also installs
software called Privoxy.) This on a development Win 2003 server.

After testing it I found that entries in the hosts file appeared to be
ignored.

I then uninstalled all the test components, expected to get back to normal.

Unfortunately hosts still appears not to be "connected".

I've subsequently found that there are issues between Privoxy and hosts.
(But no details are how to reverse any problems.)

How do I check and re-instate the normal hosts file functionality?

When you run ipconfig /displaydns does it display the contents of the hosts
file?
(Run ipconfig /flushdns command first to make sure cached lookups are
cleared.

Thanks Kevin.

I ran commands as suggested.

What I get is as follows:
1) A very short list, considerably shorter than what's in my hosts.
2) Those listed are in hosts.
3) I found one server that was duplicated (in both). I deleted the
duplicate in hosts, and it also disappeared in the ipconfig... listing.

I also went through add/remove programs to check that the items installed by
Tor were gone. They were. (These were Tor, Vidalia and Privoxy, I suspect
the last of these.)

Thanks for your time on this.

I was initially thrown off by displaydns not listing the whole hosts file.

When I investigated other issues I eventually solved this.

It's a firewall issue. Firewall off, problem goes away.
