Active Directory Integrated - add second DNS server
"Julian Brett" <nospam[ at ]nospamhere.com> 6/4/2007 3:11:14 PM
Hi.

I have a simple W2K3 domain (domain.local) with only 1 AD Integrated DNS
Server. To add resilience, I want to add another DNS Server.

I'm happy installing the DNS service on another of my AD Controllers, but
have a few queries about the configuration.

My first DNS server (IP x.x.x.254) points back to itself for DNS, and also
has two external DNS forwarders configured.

I presume that when I install my second DNS server (IP x.x.x.253), I need to
point that at itself for DNS, and not .254?

Do I need to create any Name Server (NS) records or will the DNS
configuration do this automatically?

As this is an AD Integrated DNS Server, each is able to update and maintain
the DNS entries, and should one go down, the network (from a DNS aspect)
should still be able to continue functioning.

Sorry for such a basic question, for which I should know the answer!

JB

I presume it is pointing to the x.x.x.254 for DNS now?
Install DNS on it, then after the zones have replicated to it, add its
address(x.x.x.253) as an Alternate on BOTH DCs.

It should create its own NS records, and make itself the Primary Name Server
on the SOA record.
