Some Printers not in DNS
bshort1023[ at ]yahoo.com 5/24/2007 2:44:47 PM
We have 20+ printers on the network (same subnet). Some show in DNS
and some do not. I do not see any differences between the ones that
show up and the ones that do not.

Printers are installed on 3 different Windows 2003 Servers. Domain
Controllers are Windows 2000.

All of the printers are listed in AD.

Driving me nuts.

Thanks,

bshort1023

These are Active Directory-integrated DNS zones? Active Directory-integrated
DNS zones will only register dynamic records from trusted clients ("secure
dynamic updates").

Do some of your printers obtain their IP address via DHCP and some are
configured with static IP addressing?

No, all of our printers have a static ip address.

Is there any chance someone manually created a host record for those
printers in DNS?

You said you have 20+ printers - how many show up in DNS and how many don't?

I don't know of any printers that can update a DNS zone that allows only
secure updates. It because before anything can update the zone, it must
authenticate first.

If the Printers are statically assigned, you need to manually create the
records, or change them to DHCP so the DHCP server, which can authenticate
with AD, can update the Printer IPs.
If you still wish to use static addressing, create a reservation in DHCP for
the printer. Otherwise, you'll need to use manually created records, with
the "Delete this record when it becomes stale" box cleared.
