DNS Entries Disappear
Maida 5/8/2007 12:50:02 PM
We seem to coast along then, out of the blue, we lose 3-4 DNS entries. They
are new 2003 machines and NT machines. We manually put them back.

The AD installation was configured to be integrated with DNS. It is as if
an aging process is taking place, then "boom", entries are deleted.

Are you running scavenging on your dns server?

Dynamic DNS is where machines register their own host records, if you start
removing machines and not manually cleaning them up you can really start to
pollute your zone. In comes scavenging, this is a mechanism that if the
records aren't reregistered in a 14 day window (14 days is the default but
this can be modified) then the dns server will prune them.

If you want to learn more about scavenging just do an internet search on it.
