Dynamic DNS, non-domain members and DHCP
Alex 5/16/2007 11:05:00 PM
Current scenario is; Win2k3 DHCP servers (not DCs), ADI zone/secure updates
only, DHCP configured to perform updates only when requested and for
down-level clients, DHCP configured with dyndns credentials.

Question; the only way i can see to allow non-domain windows XP/2003 clients
is to make the DHCP server perform ALL updates. Is this correct? Is there
any local setting in XP or 2003 that would allow them to act as lowerlevel
clients so DHCP would update for them?

My concern is only that if one account is used for ALL updates (dhcp
initiated updates) clients could hijack records for other clients since the
same account is the owner of the record...not servers since those are
statically assigned. This isn't a huge issue though...i don't think.

Any opinions?

thanks - Alex

Sure, clear the register this connections addresses in DNS check box in
TCP/IP properties on the clients.

That's what I thought, but the client then sends no hostname in option 61
during the request.

Sorry, 81, not 61. When checked option 81 from the client during dhcp
request is populated. When the option is not checked in network props on the
clients no 81 is sent during dhcp request.
