Getting my server to report its name as ns0.servername.co.uk
Fox1977 <foxj77[ at ]gmail.com> 5/10/2007 9:46:22 AM
I have setup a name server for a couple of domains we host at our
company. The name server works fine when i use the following domain
mydomain.co.uk.

I tried to give this to another company as we wanted to add our server
as a third name server for the domain. The web company would not
accept it as it wasn't in the usual format of ns0.domain.co.uk

Is it just a case of changing the computer name to ns0.mydomain.co.uk

The web address is already set up and points to the server as there is
a wildcard dns entry on the domain to point to the server. I just
want to make sure that the way the server reports its name is right.

Thanks in advance

John

I don't believe I've heard of a rule like this.
You will need to make sure there is an A record in the proper domain for the
name this server will answer to, and that name and IP be registered with
your registrar and listed at the ccTLD (co.uk) servers as a name server.

"Just" a case of changing the computer name?
There should be no need to rename a DNS server computer, you should be able
to add the proper zones with A records SOA and NS records to make any DNS
server answer to any name.

I'm not sure a wildcard record will work for the Glue record, and I know
that even though a lot of people use them, they usually end up causing more
trouble than they are worth.
