Fighting the dialup side effects
parahumanoid <parahumanoid[ at ]excite.com> 5/21/2007 7:39:46 PM
Hi,

What I have is a win2k3 server running the dns service and, from time
to time, using a dial-up link to connect to a remote segment of our
network (for an RDP session). Now, what happens, if I understand this
right, is that whenever a dialup connection is established, it becomes
the default connection (but the link is "Internetless"), so all
Internet connectivity on the network dies. Can I enforce it somehow
that my Internet connection remains LAN, despite the established
dialup link? What should I do?

Thank you.

Add the registry settings in this KB may work, I had to add it on my Demand
Dial server.

Connections no longer use Local Area Network automatic configuration and
proxy settings:

The article you mentioned is dedicated to IE. I was talking about
traffic routing per se. That is, what would IE installation have to do
with the fact that a regular PING stops reaching internet hosts after
a dialup connection is esablished? I don't even use this browser. Or
did I not understand you fully?

You are correct, I wasn't even considering this to be a routing issue, which
I should have and it definitely is. However, the article you posted
previously is for VPN client connections, if this is a VPN connection, the
article relates to your issue.
From your original post, it is not clear what type the connection is, but it
really does not matter, if it gets a default gateway, it's going to be an
issue. VPN connections, on the other hand, should have a way to override
getting this default route. At least the built-in VPN client from Microsoft
does.

Not the whole article is VPN related. It has a section on regular
dialup connections.
