Hello group
i have a windows 2003 std server with active directory with a local domain
mydomain.local, running dns server to support the AD, i also run iis with my
page, and exchange server 2003 as well
it has a private ip 192.168.1.4 for the intranet, but i also have a public ip
20023.242.207 (of course it points to my isp modem-router, and from there i
redirect needed ports to my server), the name of the server is ccsrv01
and i have a domain registered mydomain.com.mx, and my provider is pointing
that domain to my public ip
and a created a new zone in my dns named mydomain.com.mx, and it has the
records created by the wizard and also some that i added, like this:
A 200.27.242.204
NS ccsrv01.mydomain.local.
NS ccsrv01.mydomain.com.mx.
SOA ccsrv01.mydomain.local. mydomain.com.mx.
MX 10 www.mydomain.com.mx.
TXT "v=spf1 a mx ~all"
www A 200.27.242.204
ccsrv01 A 192.168.1.4
mail Alias(CNAME) www.mydomain.com.mx
and also created a reverse zone for 192.168.1. and creater a pointer to the
dns server
the thing is that im not sure about the configurtation, where can i find
information about this?
i have questions like, in my dns, what ip should i use? do i have to
register my dns somewhere?

If this is the zone for public access, STOP!
This zone data is not advisable because one NS record and the SOA primary
record points to IP addresses that will not work from the internet.
If you have this zone so that you can access the sites locally, it is OK,
but do not publish this zone to the internet. Keep your public zone on DNS
server that are specifically set up for users on the internet.

Actually, yes, all DNS servers that host zones for public access must have
their A records published at the TLD servers that the NS record would belong
to. In this case it would be the com.mx ccTLD, your registrar creates the
records for you, or you may be able to create them yourself, depending on
your registrar, many allow you to create the A record in the web interface
where you manage your public domain name. (Look for DNS host records)
I'm not saying you cannot host your own public zone, or that you should not,
it really depends on whether you have the hardware resources to do it. I
host my own zones for many public domains, but I have two server dedicated
strictly to hosting public zones, I also have several secondary servers set
up at remote locations on dedicated high speed high bandwidth DNS servers
provided by AT&T.
