can't see network computers
AnnW 6/14/2007 2:52:00 AM
I'm trying to set up a new computer (XP) on a network with a domain (Server
2003). I can ping an IP address but cannot ping a computer by name. No
computers show in the network. I think it is a dns problem. Can someone
give me some direction as to what I might try? I used the network connection
wizard and even got the Welcome to the domain message. I can see the network
icon but get an error when I try to open it to see the computers.

Network Places does not use DNS, Network Places requires NetBIOS resolution,
and is populated by the computer browser service.

Make sure NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all clients, and if you have
multiple subnets, you'll also need to use a WINS server.

Thank you for this information, especially that it is not a dns problem. I
have problems figuring out the dns situation. What I found was the cause of
the problem was a firewall on a trial Symantec application. I had disabled
the Windows firewall when trying to troubleshoot but I did not know about the
other firewall. Once I disabled it, the computes appeared in the network.
